Say Hello to Mushrooms

by Arpita Pani

Here at Health and Organic Wellbeing we have a great mushroom recipe for you courtesy of one of our team members Arpita Pani. Although before we get down to it lets hear some facts about the nutritional values the mushroom has. Mushrooms are considered to be one of the highest antioxidants ranking up alongside red pepper and spinach. That alone is a good enough reason to start eating more mushrooms.

If your still not sold you should also know that mushrooms are also high in fibre and a great source of protein therefore leaving you feeling fuller for longer. Which is good when it comes to those tempting snack times we all love so much. One of the most common forms of the mushroom is the white close-cup although there a few more versions of the vegetable that aren't far behind such as, button, open-cup and large.

The mushroom gets its colour from being grown in the dark and not many people know this but the vegetable continues to grow even after it is picked. Now enough of the facts it's time to hear Arpita Pani's recipe.

Arpita's quick mushroom fix:

350g of white button mushrooms rinse under cold water and slice in half.
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil gently heated in the pan.
Sauté mushrooms with 1/2 a teaspoon of salt and a pinch of ground black pepper.
Add 1 crushed garlic clove.
Cook for 4 minutes until mushrooms are brown.
Toast some olive bread.
Serve on plate with mushrooms and olive bread.
Bon apetite!

5 ways in which this dish is beneficial:

Mushrooms are a natural source of B vitamins with an 80g serving counting as one of your 5-a-day.
Mushrooms are also a natural source of selenium which is part of the body's antioxidant defence system.
They are naturally low in fat and calories.
They are also a good source of vitamin B5 which works with the body to release energy with from the food we eat.
They are a natural source of folic acid.

Therefore ensure you have mushrooms on your next shopping list to ensure a healthy nutritious meal.

What Steps Do You Take?

By Samuel Alexander-Stubbings

The weekends here and I'm wondering what to do. Although I know one thing I want my weekend to involve walking, so lets hope the weather brightens up. You might be wondering why I want to work more walking into my weekend, therefore I'll bring you up to speed.

It all began during my last year at University when a tutor of mine gave us all a helpful tip to get over writers block. The advice was simple yet effective, go for a walk. It was as easy as that, she told us in time of need we should take to the streets and just walk. I was sceptical at first but it was only until I had got back from walking the dog and my mother said to me how refreshed I looked and informed me that taking the dog for a walk may well have something to do with it.

I sat and thought about it for a while and I realised she weren't wrong. From then on I used walking as a tool to refresh and gather my thoughts. By going for a walk I was able to draw up a mental to-do list in my head and organise my day. It's a great way to manage stress and also a great form of cardiovascular exercise.

Walking after meals is a great way to let your food go down and kick-start your metabolism too. But more than anything you actually start to notice the benefits of walking the more you do it. By making the decision to walk more you are able to fit more exercise into your life with minimal effort and the best thing is it costs nothing and can be incorporated everywhere you go. Walk with friends, family, the dog or just on your own and as you do so you'll start to notice the improvements to your physical health and your state of mind.

This works for me anyway, so I am curious to know what your methods of de-stress are. We at Health and Organic Wellbeing want to know what it is you do when your feeling a little down in the dumps and need a little refresh?

Weather it's the gym, food, rest, socialising or abseiling please lets us know what it is that helps you in time of need?

The Right Stuff

By Samuel Alexander-Stubbings

It’s safe to say that I’m a foodie besides judging by recent post I think it’s rather apparent. That’s why I joined the Health and Organic Wellbeing team in the first place because here, unlike other health supplement suppliers they know that it takes more than just a few capsules of compact vitamins to stay in shape.

Not only do they know it takes more than a few supplements but they also know that when it comes to supplements what to include. That’s why all Health and Organic Wellbeing products are 100% natural and 100% organic. They live by the rule, what you put into your body is what you get out.
Meaning that here at Health and Organic Wellbeing we understand the importance of living and eating healthy and avoiding unnatural substances and shortcuts when it comes to our health. Which is why we encourage our Health and Organic Wellbeing family to eat and when we do making sure we eat the right stuff.

Therefore we want to stay dedicated to keeping you up to date with all the latest advice on nutrition and healthy living because like us we want you to feel the benefits of a healthy, happy lifestyle too. So stay tuned folks because we have a lot in store for you.

So What Do I Eat?..

By Samuel Alexander-Stubbings

In our last post we mentioned how important it is to eat. Yet it leaves the question what to eat? Now it goes without saying fresh food is the best food, although just because it’s fresh doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you. That’s why here at Health & Organic Wellbeing we want to make sure you are able to find out what you need in order to maintain a healthy balanced diet.

One of the main things to remember when it comes to your meals is to avoid as much as possible saturated fats. These are the worst fats to intake because they are notorious for clogging arteries because the body doesn’t absorb them as well as other fats that are better for you and work with the body to provide energy.

Also another helpful tip to remember when watching your weight is now your GDA’s (Guideline Daily Allowance) now typically this is 2,000 calories per day for women and 2,500 calories a day for men. Common knowledge states that as long as your not eating over your daily-recommended amount the risk of becoming overweight is reduced in comparison to those who indulge and eat way of their GDA.

Breakfast is a must dishes like cereal, toast & yogurt are excellent ways to get that morning boost you need to tie you over until lunchtime. Cereal and toast are a good source of carbohydrate to provide you with energy to keep you going. As for yogurt it is a good source of protein without starting your day with too much saturated fat.

Dishes like salmon and potatoes are a good meal to have in the lunch hour along with many other fish dishes. This is a good way to top up your carbohydrate a protein intake until you’re able to start thinking about dinner. When it comes to dinner it’s wise to avoid heavy dosages of carbohydrate because that’s the kind of thing that can keep you feeling bloated and puffy.

Therefore meals that include chicken and vegetables or beef and steamed veg are the most favourable for dinnertime. This is because these particular types of meals have a lot of protein, which is good for your muscles and doesn’t just sit on your tummy. Also the reason we suggest steamed veg is because by steaming your vegetables your allowing all the minerals they posses to be locked in which can be lost through other methods of cooking.

Keep Eating...

By Samuel Alexander-Stubbings

Here at Health & Organic Wellbeing we know it takes more than just a few supplements a day to give you the body you desire. Besides anything that claimed such miracle work would be more than likely very unsavoury. That’s why we think it’s important that we provide more than just a health supplement we want to provide useful guidance and advice for healthy people.
In this article we want to talk about nutrition and in particular, eating habits.  The reason for this is because a common mistake made by dieters is NOT eating. This is one of the worst things anyone can do when trying to shed those winter pounds.

By not eating you are forcing your body to restore fat therefore making it harder to burn off. So you end up starving yourself for no reason.  Another thing to consider when trying the shock approach to weight loss is that you have to be extremely strong-minded if you are ever to succeed.
The reason for this is because the longer you starve your body of food the more your body craves it. Although because your body is crying out for energy it craves high-calorie fatty foods as apposed to healthy and nutritious meals, in the long run you end up not eating all day only to stuff your face late at night.

Again this has a negative effect on your healthy regime and messes with your body clock. The best thing you can do when trying to loose weight is EAT! Sounds too good to be true right? Yet it’s true, this is what you have to do to gain results. So relax, stop worrying and start eating.

Now you may be thinking “it was my excessive eating that got me here in the first place!” that’s why when we say eating is the key to healthy weight loss we mean healthy eating and meal timing. As for those treats you love ever so much, it’s not good-bye forever but it is hello MODERATION.
One of the most important things to remember is AVOID LATE NIGHT SNACKING at all costs. This is one of the main causes of weight gain due to your body not being able to burn off the intake of calories before bed.
